Well, the foundation for every chord name and every song is built upon a scale. Even if you're playing by ear, it's all based on the scale. Musicians who can't play in a key don't understand how to think in the key. That too starts with the scale.

For instance, the C Major Scale should be converted from:

The number system is a fantastic way to train your ear to identify song structure. Also, the number system is a great way to communicate with other musicians.
