Do You Need The Basics?

Are you looking to become a musician who can play any song in any key? It all starts with mastering the basics, which means gaining a working knowledge of scales. Why is this important? Well, the foundation for every chord name and every song is built upon a scale. Even if you're playing by ear, it's all based on the scale. Musicians who can't play in a key don't understand how to think in the key. That too starts with the scale.

If you're ready to start playing songs and progressions by ear, check out this video. It will introduce you to the Major Scale in a way that will help you develop your overall musical abilities.

Do You Need Help With The Number System?

Would you like some help with understanding the number system?

Once you memorize the notes in the Major Scale, you need to know how to start applying that knowledge. Ask yourself, what is it that you need to know to help you better use the Major Scale to help you play by ear? The answer is simple. You need to know how to convert the scale into numbers. For instance, the C Major Scale should be converted from:

C D E F G A B C  - to - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

The number system is a fantastic way to train your ear to identify song structure. Also, the number system is a great way to communicate with other musicians.

Practicing scales should be more than finger exercises. It should be an exercise that builds "working knowledge" or "practical knowledge" that translates into a better ability to play by ear. Our website teaches scales in a way that helps you achieve just that!

Watch this video to learn more about the number system. And when you're ready, our complete course will guide you perfectly.

I Already Play But I Sound Basic. I Need New Chords

It seems that you've spent time learning to play your style of music, but you're still not satisfied with your sound. You mentioned that you feel your music sounds "basic", and you're wondering how to fix that.

Well, your music sounds basic because you have a limited "working knowledge of chords". If you've only learned the basic chord types, it's no wonder that you're not satisfied with your sound.  If you don't know how to effectively use those basic chords, I bet you've spent too much time on YouTube searching for fancy chords.

Let me share something with you for free. To make your music sound less "basic," you need to expand your knowledge of chords and learn how to effectively use chords. That's what we call "working knowledge".

In our book The Musicians Practice Plan, we talk about the different chords you need to study for the style of music you play.  Each style of music has a certain type of sound. That sound is created by the type of chords used.  To better create that sound you must know what chords to use based on the style of music you are playing.  Gospel music uses a ton of Dominant Chords while CCM uses a ton of Sus Chords.  Did you already know that and do you know those types of chords in every key?

If you sound basic then there's one diagnosis.  You don't understand chord types, how they are used, and when to use them. Because this is true, you need to become a member of this website to take advantage of our courses and classes. We can teach you new chords while we simultaneously help you to better play the chords you already know.

Check out this video for a better understanding of chords then join our website memberships to learn how to be more creative when playing.
